Alcoholics Anonymous...and addictions...
A close family member of mine has started a road to recovery. He has been sober four and a half months now and went to a rehab and is now in a halfway house. Now two weeks ago he learned of another way to stay sober and it is called Rational Recovery where one does not have to attend meetings but more or less just change their way of thinking. (from what I gathered anyway) I checked out the website and it seems like it would work. I am just wondering how many people also think the RR way could work. That one can maintain sobriety without going to AA meetings? I will post the link here if anyone is interested in checking it out before answering. This site also says their technique will work with other addictions as well such as gambling smoking or drugs. This person in my life has not stopped going to meetings but has simply started using the RR way with AA. I am looking forward to any and all feedback. Positive and negative. Thanks!http://rational.org/index.php
Need to give up drinking
I'm still hungover from last night, feel like I've lost a day because I drank too much. I've been partying and drinking for over 10 years now, often feel like I want to give it up but everytime I try I fail. Social drinking is so much part of our culture now that it is hard to give it up, a lot of my friends I only see when we go for a drink, so what would I do with them if I gave it up?There's so many reasons to give it up, I'd have more money, be healthier, I wouldn't make a fool out of myself so often! And no hangovers! Have any of you successfully given up partying and drinking? If so how did you do it? Gradually stop or just stop all of a sudden?
N.A and A.A meetings
As many or at least some of you, know I am both an alcoholic and drug addict...Now I've been clean for 6 yrs now and drink only socially (though not at all lately for specific reasons) and got clean and sober on my own without attending any meetings of any kind etc etc....Well last night while on the phone with my bf we were talking about his recovery etc and he asked me to go to an A.A meeting with him while I'm there visiting him in a couple weeks.....Initially I said yes thinking that I could go as an observer but then he told me that I'd have to put my hand up when the group leader asks if there are any first timers there...Well in all honesty I'm not sure how comfortable I am with that....so my questions are for those who've attended meetings...and they are the following- how uncomfortable were you at your first meeting....- what was your thought about it AFTER your first meeting..- have you ever attended a meeting NOT becuase you personally needed to but becuase you were there with a loved one who did- if so, how was it for you- can you describe what the meeting procedure etc was like in your eyes and would you do it again, recommend it etc etc...
Alcoholism...
I was just wondering what the different symptoms of an alcoholic are? I know a lot of people that take out their stress with alcohol and a lot of those people are super close to me. I just wondered if there's anyone out there who has gone through the disease or knows someone who has. I would like to know ways to beat it or pick it out. Thanks so much for your help!
I have a confession.
In the news yesterday it said that alcohol sales were up in Canada but Canadian said they were not drinking more. Basically they are lying about the amount they are acually drinking. I lie too about the amount and how often I drink. Mylot makes me want to confess my sins. I have a drinking problem.
Some support for giving up alcohol please!!
I realise at the weekend that since i started drinking alcohol 28 years ago, i have never went more than a week without getting drunk!this scared me, but not as much as my Liver who sent me a begging letter...."Dear axlecan you please give me and my cousin the Kidneys a break from alcohol.30 days would be lovely.yours sincerelyLionel Liver & Kenny Kidney." I am now on day 4 and feeling the pressure already! lol!i do not expect to last the 30 days (especially as my wife is coming up to her time of the month!) but i can look back to giving up smoking. i did not put pressure on myself and now i am 1 year this month without a cigerette.does anyone have any tips to stay of the drink?thanks in advance.
are you an addict or alcholic
i'm wondering how many people on here are in recovery? how many know they have a problem with drugs or alcohol and have done something about it and how many people have someone saying there is a problem and still do not beleive that there is. for the once that know there is a problem and are in recovery what made you realize that there was a problem? what made you get into the NArcotics anonymous program or the alcoholics anonymous program?? for those of you that don't beleive but have heard people talking about you saying there is a problem what would it take for you to want to quit and better your life there is a better way out there clean and sober than there ever will be drunk or high...... only in AA and NA are we given very special simple steps on how to live life on lifes terms with out alcohol or drugs. i came to AA first because i drank alot and i knew there was alcoholism in my family.
Favorite prayer?
Do you have a favorite prayer, mantra, etc? I like the "Alcoholics Anonymous" prayer to be honest, because it has a great message and anyone can live by it.
Things That Make You Go .......Hmmmmmmmm:
Why is it called Alcoholics Anonymous when the first thing you do is stand up and say, 'My name is Peter and I am an alcoholic'?
Alcoholism - is anyone here an alcoholic or love one of an alcoholic?
My husband is an alcoholic. He has been sober for 3 1/2 years. I have a friend who is struggling right now with her husband who is an alcoholic but isn't in recovery. I told her that it wasn't until I "let go" and almost "stopped caring" about my husband's drinking that he sobered up. Anyone else have experiences to share?
