Spiritual Related Discussions on The Living Bible | | Words For 2010! | | My wish for 2010 is to send a verse a day to my two kids. The internet gives me no excuse to not follow through with this. We are all on Facebook, MySpace and we have emails, of course. Scripture from God's Word (the living Bible) are Words to live by. Here's something for all my MyLot friends. | | Have you ever read the Bible? If you have, which version is your favorite? | | One of the most important books a person can ever own or read is the Bible. It is the bestselling Book of all time, and best of all, it is God's Word! There are a number of versions of the Bible out there for people today to read--word-for-word literal versions (like the King James Version or the American Standard Version), thought-for-thought versions (like the New International Version--NIV, or the Complete Jewish Bible--CJB), or paraphrases (like the New Living Bible). My favorites are the King James Version (KJV) and the CJB, which helps me understand the Jewishness of the Bible. I also have software that I downloaded for free (the software designer takes donations). My version of the software has about 30 translations, around 15 Bible commentaries, 3 Greek and Hebrew word studies, and Bible dictionaries, maps, etc. I like to sit at my computer while I read my Bible so I can access this useful software to do word studies, compare translations, get maps, or read what one of the commentators has written to get a different perspective on a verse that I am thinking about.

| | How many Bibles do you have? | | I know it's not how many you have, but how much you read them... but still, I'm curious. I have 3 King James versions, one regular, a Thompson Chain Bible and a Dake's Annotated Bible. I also have a New International Version, The Living Bible, The Amplified Bible, The Message, and The Jewish Study Bible. That sounds like I'm more of a Bible student than I am, but it does help at times to read the same passage in various ways. | |
| | Homosexuality and God | | Does God really consider homosexuality wrong or are we seeing things the way we want to see them? Read this and see what you think:Leviticus 18:22
Some English translations of this verse are:* KJV: (King James Version):Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind: it is abomination* LB: (Living Bible):Homosexuality is absolutely forbidden, for it is an enormous sin* NIV: (New International Version)Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable* NLT: (New Living Translation):Do not practice homosexuality; it is a detestable sin* RSV: (Revised Standard Version):You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination
One source (4) makes a word-for-word translation of this verse from the original Hebrew as:And with a male thou shalt not lie down in beds of a woman; it is an abomination. In modern day English this could be translated as:Men may not engage in homosexual sex while on a woman’s bed; it is an abomination That is, "rather than forbidding male homosexuality, it simply restricts where it may occur." This may seem a strange prohibition to us today, but was quite... | |
| | What version of the Bible do you prefer to read? | | There are so many different versions nowadays to choose from when going to purchase a Bible. I was wondering what was the more popular version and why? I used to have a King James Bible, but in recent years I have also liked the New King James Version, and the American Standard Version, I have found it easier to read and comprehend. I don't personally care for the NIV or Living Bible, but that is a personal choice. I found too many differences in scripture when my kids and I would compare. But I know many others who do enjoy these Bibles and prefer them. Please if you don't mind sharing with me, what is your favorite and why? | |
| | Bible Translations | | Do you read the Bible? If so, what translation do you use? What is your opinion on paraphrased translations (like the Living Bible)? In my opinion, I think that certain translations are a little scary. Some completely omit verses (the New International Version is missing at least 40 verses, like Mark 7:16 and 11:26). Some churches claim that the Bible is the literal word of God and then turn around and suggest members use the Living Bible for Bible study. Since it is a paraphrased translation, doesn't that seem odd?I myself have read and use the KJV, but also have copies of a few of the newer translations. The KJV is also a translation and probably has issues to since translations never quite seem to catch the full meaning of the original. | |
| | Do you permit divorce? | | The inviolability of marriage was clearly emphasized by the Lord Jesus when he answered the question of the Pharisees wo tried to trap Him. "Do you permit divorce?"Some Pharisees came to interview him and tried to trap him into saying something that would ruin him. 'Do you permit divorce?' they asked. 'Don't you read the Scriptures?' he replies. 'In them it is written that at the beginning God created man and woman, and that a man should leaves his father and mother and be forever united to his wife. the two shall become one - no longer two but one! and no man may divorce what God has joined together.' (Mt 19:3-6 living Bible)Marriage is a union between husband and wife. It allows no pre-condition as many have done these days. It is a life long commitment -"for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in health or in sickness, until death do us part." indeed,no man may divorce what God has joined together. If only this will remembered by people nowadays and put into their hearts and minds, perhaps divorce is not existed. What can you say about it? | |
